MORPHOGENESIS / Program note

Entropy Bloom

The Vertex

About the work

Entropy Bloom is an electronic music performance that applies logistic map theory to the generation and transformation of sound. Scattered sonic fragments accumulate in layers and combine into a musical structure, expressing morphogenesis as new forms arising from interactions among small elements.

Musical structure

The first phase reveals chaos through the disorderly emergence of sound. In the next phase, rhythmic and pitch patterns form alongside changes in harmonics. Finally, the patterns expand through repetition and transformation before returning to the initial disorder, expressing a cycle of chaos and order.

Technology & performance

Values generated by the logistic map are mapped to rhythm, pitch, and harmonics for real-time sonic transformation and algorithmic composition. Kyma and Max/MSP sustain the musical flow, while Leap Motion and MIDI controllers adjust changes in sound in real time.

Entropy Bloom
This electronic music performance uses logistic map theory to express the process through which disordered sounds gradually acquire rhythms and patterns and grow into a musical form.

The logistic map's capacity to reveal regularity within unpredictable chaos is applied to the generation and transformation of sound. Scattered sonic fragments accumulate in layers and combine, gradually creating a musical structure.

This process expresses morphogenesis through sound: small elements repeatedly interact and combine to create new forms. Through a cycle of chaos and order, the work expresses the vitality of sound as it is continually generated and transformed.

Musical structure
Phase 1. Disorderly appearances of sound express a state of chaos.
Phase 2. As order becomes established, rhythmic and pitch patterns form alongside changes in harmonics.
Phase 3. The resulting patterns gradually expand through repetition and transformation, then return to the initial state of disorder, expressing the cycle of disorder and order.

Technical structure
Values generated by the logistic map are mapped to rhythm, pitch, and harmonics. They transform sound in real time or serve as elements of algorithmic composition that generate musical patterns. Kyma and Max/MSP maintain the musical flow, while Leap Motion and MIDI controllers are used to adjust changes in sound in real time during the performance.
