MORPHOGENESIS / Program note

Emergence / Inner Pattern / Morph

YEJIN HWANG UNIT (황예진 유닛)

About the work

YEJIN HWANG UNIT presents three pieces exploring how form and order arise and change in nature. Changes in rhythm, dynamics, timbre and performance approach express the emergence of new structures, recurring patterns in nature and the gradual transformation of a single form.

Musical structure

Emergence depicts the generation and expansion of energy through a lively bass riff, shifting meters and contrasts in dynamics and performance density.

Inner Pattern centers on a laid-back groove and repeating rhythmic patterns. Subtle changes in phrasing, accents and rhythm express different forms arising within the same set of rules.

Morph retains a funk and smooth jazz groove in A minor while gradually changing harmony, phrasing, dynamics and the roles of the instruments.

Technology & performance

In Emergence, the ensemble is coordinated to maintain a shared pulse through meter changes, with dynamics and performance density changing either gradually or abruptly.

In Inner Pattern, notes are deliberately played behind a steady reference beat. Fine adjustments to each instrument’s timing and accents create a laid-back feel.

In Morph, the rhythm section maintains the basic groove while the keyboard and other instruments change their timbre, performance density, phrasing and roles, giving each section a different texture.

PROGRAM NOTE
This performance interprets the theme of Morphogenesis through music, drawing an analogy with the processes through which form and order are generated and transformed in nature.

The three pieces present different aspects of morphogenesis: from a vast emergence such as the birth of the universe, through the repeating rules and patterns found in nature and the gradual transformation of form, to variation that departs from an existing order.

Each piece has distinct musical features, including shifting meters, laid-back grooves, funk and smooth jazz. Changes in rhythm, dynamics, timbre and performance approach express the process through which a form is generated and transformed.

1. Emergence
RELATION TO THE PERFORMANCE THEME
Emergence begins with the moment when new forms and order appear suddenly, as in the Big Bang. It expresses in music the process through which powerful energy arises and expands from an unpredictable state, creating new structures. In showing a new form beginning from a single event, the piece represents a starting point for morphogenesis.

MUSICAL CONTENT
The main elements are shifting meters, dynamic contrasts and a lively bass riff. A repeating bass riff drives the piece and creates an energetic flow, while meter changes within the ongoing rhythm introduce tension and variation. Contrasts in loudness and performance density further express the generation and expansion of energy.

TECHNICAL CONTENT
The lively bass riff serves as the rhythmic axis, with the instrumental parts carefully coordinated so that the whole band maintains a shared pulse even through meter changes. Dynamics and performance density also change gradually or abruptly, clearly expressing the contrast between a stable flow and sudden change.

2. Inner Pattern
RELATION TO THE PERFORMANCE THEME
Inner Pattern begins with the underlying rules and order repeatedly found in natural forms. Natural forms may look different—such as the spiral structures of snails and shells, the repeating patterns on seashells and the geometric arrangements of a turtle’s shell—but recurring patterns and principles exist within them.

Rather than focusing on outward form, this piece concentrates on the internal repetition and regularity that produce it.

MUSICAL CONTENT
The music develops around a laid-back groove and repeating rhythmic patterns. While maintaining a single basic pattern, subtle changes in phrasing, accents and rhythm express the process through which slightly different forms emerge within the same set of rules.

TECHNICAL CONTENT
The laid-back feel is created by deliberately placing notes behind a steady reference beat. Rather than simply slowing the tempo, the band maintains a shared pulse while fine-tuning each instrument’s timing and accents to form a relaxed groove.

3. Morph
RELATION TO THE PERFORMANCE THEME
Morph expresses the process through which a form gradually changes over time rather than remaining fixed. It draws inspiration from natural processes, such as plant growth and cellular differentiation, in which a basic structure persists while internal changes accumulate and lead to a new form.

MUSICAL CONTENT
The piece develops around a funk and smooth jazz groove in A minor. While preserving its basic rhythm and musical character, it gradually changes harmony, phrasing, dynamics and the roles of the instruments to express the transformation of a single musical material into multiple forms.

TECHNICAL CONTENT
The rhythm section maintains the basic groove as the central axis, while the keyboard and other instruments change their timbre, performance density, phrasing and roles. Changes in arrangement and timbre create a different texture in each section while preserving the music’s basic identity.
