Natural Selection
About the work
Natural Selection explores through Electronic Disco the evolutionary principle by which individuals better suited to survival persist over time and establish new forms. It invites listeners to experience the formation of sound through an analogy with natural selection.
Musical structure
Individual sonic elements continually mutate and undergo selection to form a piece of music. The focus is on sounds changing in real time, acquiring multidimensional forms, and gathering into a musical structure.
Technology & performance
The performance uses the repeating 16-step structure of the Digitakt hardware sampler. Individual sounds change in real time within this cycle, making audible the process through which sonic mutation and selection lead to new musical forms.

Program note
This work interprets the evolutionary principle of natural selection through Electronic Disco: over time, individuals better suited to survival persist and establish new forms.
Within the repeating 16-step structure of the Digitakt hardware sampler, individual sonic elements continually undergo mutation and selection. We invite you to listen with the work's theme, Natural Selection, in mind as sounds change in real time, acquire multidimensional forms, and come together to form a piece of music.
